At a glance
- Check the reload cost
Read the loaded shots. Subtract that number from five to see how many usable shots a reload adds.
- Check the next threat
Compare the remaining shots with target health and the chance to hit several zombies together.
- Spend the cartridge deliberately
Reload when the full magazine helps the next decision, then confirm five shots are loaded before firing again.
Work out what the reload buys
At zero loaded shots, a reload adds five usable shots. At two loaded shots, it adds three. At four, it adds only one. Each action costs the same complete cartridge. This arithmetic makes an empty-magazine reload economical, although waiting for empty is useful only while you can keep the hunter out of contact.
Reloading a full magazine adds nothing at all. Check the loaded-shot counter before touching the smaller reload control, especially after collecting a floor cartridge. A pickup increases the spare-cartridge count; it does not mean the gun needs refilling. Treat the pickup and the decision to use it as two separate actions.
Recognize a sensible early reload
Imagine you have two shots loaded, one cartridge spare, and a group that includes an untouched tier-five zombie. That zombie needs three valid hits. Reloading now gives you enough loaded shots to finish it, with two left if all three connect. You pay for that flexibility by discarding the two shots that were still loaded.
Another choice is to use those two shots first, provided you can land them and still have room to act. Reloading is immediate, so you can keep moving as soon as the new load is ready. The practical benefit is having a full magazine ready before your attention is divided between a group, a turn, and an escape route.

Make the remaining shots do useful work
An early reload is costly when the shots already loaded can finish the nearby threat. With two shots loaded and two one-hit zombies, an aligned shot might kill both. That leaves a shot in the gun and keeps the cartridge available. Refilling first would spend a cartridge before you know whether the encounter needs one.
Look at damaged targets as well as untouched ones. Tiers three through five show remaining-health bars after taking damage. A tougher zombie that needs only one more hit may be a better use of your last shot than a fresh target. If both fit inside the cone, the same shot can finish one and damage the other.
Plan the route to your next cartridge
A new hunt gives you no spare cartridges, and level one has none on the ground. Later levels can seed zero to two floor cartridges. There is no rule promising a pickup on every level, and killing a zombie never creates one. Scan the arena rather than assuming that firing your last shot will lead to a refill.
If a pickup sits beyond an awakened group, weigh the route against the corridor you could already use to leave. Reaching the item adds one complete cartridge, but the trip can cost your life. A cartridge is valuable because it lets you reload; it is not a requirement for advancing to the next level.
Respond calmly to an empty magazine
Pressing FIRE with no shots loaded is a dry action. The game does not automatically consume a spare cartridge for you. If you have one, use RELOAD yourself. If you have none, further FIRE presses cannot solve the immediate problem, so turn your attention to movement, a floor pickup, or an open exit.
An early exit abandons the living zombies and advances one level without the clear reward. That may be a better outcome than spending a life trying to reach ammunition. This is particularly relevant at the start of a hunt, when you have only one life and a capture ends the run instead of providing another attempt at the same arena.
More questions
Can I keep the unused shots from an early reload?
No. Reloading replaces the magazine with five shots and discards anything left in it. The spare cartridge is consumed as a whole, so the unused shots do not return to a separate ammunition reserve.
Will holding on to a cartridge give me more than five loaded shots?
No. The magazine always holds at most five shots. Extra cartridges give you future reloads; they do not increase the number of shots available before the next reload.
